Nupur’s Story: Returning to Data
Published October 3, 2025Nupur Babar, Microsoft Power BI Developer at Convex (6-year career break)
After relocating to London in 2007, I worked as a Microsoft Business Intelligence Professional, specialising in database design, dimensional modelling, and SQL Server capabilities. Subsequently, I decided to take a career break to dedicate time to my young family.
During my six-year break, I was wrapped up in the world of motherhood. My partner frequently travelled abroad, so I embraced the role of a full-time homemaker. Being at home with my little one was the best thing ever. I spent many hours at children’s centres, parks and libraries, and I joined a local gardening group as a volunteer. Being part of that community and working in the gardens with such wonderful people made every minute worthwhile.
Motherhood taught me the art of patience and honed my multitasking skills in ways I had never imagined. I discovered a newfound passion for handmade creations, which brought me immense satisfaction: from crafting fancy dress costumes and clothes for my little one to baking and art projects at home. As my child grew older and began to gain more independence, I felt it was the right time to re-engage with my career. I missed the intellectual stimulation and challenges that come with working in a professional environment. I was also eager to apply the new skills and perspectives I had developed during my break.
To find a new role, I started by reflecting on my career goals and updating my CV and LinkedIn profile. I networked with former colleagues and professional contacts, actively searched for job opportunities and tailored my applications accordingly.
Despite thorough preparation for interviews and engaging in online courses to stay up-to-date with industry trends, I found that my technical skills had become somewhat rusty. They were not meeting the expectations of many employers, who anticipated the same level of competence as those who had not taken a career break. Many companies also looked for specific certifications and courses I may have completed during my career break.
Fortunately, I discovered the Career Returners group, whose support was instrumental in helping me bridge this gap and successfully re-enter the workforce. Their structured programme provided invaluable guidance and resources. Additionally, I benefited from the mentorship and advice of experienced professionals, as well as the reassurance and encouragement from peers who were navigating similar transitions. These collective efforts were instrumental in helping me rebuild my confidence, update my skills, and successfully secure a new job.
I was fortunate to secure a position as a Microsoft Power BI developer at Convex Insurance. This was a completely new industry for me, which presented fresh and exciting opportunities for growth. I had to accept that returning to full-time work would be challenging but backed with the right encouragement from family and others, I was able to navigate these obstacles and slowly transition back into the workforce. Rebuilding my self-belief was a bit of a hurdle, which I addressed by seeking advice from mentors and peers. Balancing family life with a new job required careful time management and flexibility.
Convex provided substantial guidance and resources in my return to work, making the transition smooth and welcoming. They offered a structured onboarding process that helped me acclimatise to the company’s culture and operations. Regular training sessions and workshops were instrumental in updating my technical skills and knowledge, ensuring I was well-prepared for my role. Additionally, Convex fostered a supportive environment through mentorship programmes and connecting me with experienced professionals who provided guidance and encouragement. The company’s flexible work approach played a crucial part in balancing my family responsibilities with professional commitments. Overall, Convex’s comprehensive support system and great team not only helped facilitate my return to work but also empowered me to thrive in my new position.
My advice for someone preparing to return to work is:
- approach the process with confidence and a clear plan
- reflect on your career goals and identify the skills you need to refresh or acquire
- update your resume and LinkedIn profile to highlight your experiences and readiness to re-enter the workforce
- be honest about your break and be proud of it
- embrace the unique experiences and skills you gained during your break and stay positive about what’s to come
- trust that your skills and knowledge will return with practice and patience
- networking is crucial, so reconnect with former colleagues, professional contacts, and explore returner programmes that can offer support and guidance
- don’t hold back on any questions or thoughts you may have, voice them with peers and platforms like these, as there are many people sailing in the same boat.
Finally, it is important to be patient with oneself and understand that the transition may take time.
Never stop trying!
